Durante su infancia, Daniel Blaker pasaba mucho tiempo con su abuelo, carpintero. «Su arte –dice Blaker, director creativo de la empresa londinense de diseño de iluminación Nulty– consistía básicamente crear algo de la nada, de un simple pedazo de madera».

Es una idea que compara con su trabajo actual y que aplica como estrategia de iluminación. «Quitas parte de la oscuridad, como si estuvieras cepillando parte del material con que trabajas para revelar lo que oculta», explica. Como con los objetos físicos, Blaker piensa en la iluminación en términos de textura: estudia cómo interactúan los diferentes materiales entre sí y con la luz.

Detalles de este tipo ayudan a contar la historia de un lugar y a producir una respuesta emocional.

«Ya se trate de la fachada de un edificio, de un apartamento o de un espacio comercial, es muy importante que exista un hilo conductor, una especie de narrativa que recorra el proyecto para reforzar su identidad», afirma. Y añade: «Intento centrarme en la siguiente pregunta: ¿Cómo te sientes cuando estás en ese lugar?».
